EHL Ingredients now supplying Australian Lemon Myrtle
EHL Ingredients has launched a brand new, natural ingredient to the UK food sector – Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora).

The importer, blender and packer of natural food ingredients is among the first suppliers to import the herb into the UK from Australia.

Lemon Myrtle is an Australian bush spice combining the tartness of lemon and the sweet flavour of basil. It is a delicate citrus herb and highly versatile for use in many food and drink products.

EHL Ingredients supplies organic Lemon Myrtle and it is available in a dried herb form in varying quantities.

It can come as a herbal tea mix, ready to be sold in tea bags on store shelves, or in bulk for adding to tea blends. In foods, the herb can be used as a replacement for lemongrass, lemon zest or instead of the kaffa lime leaf in Asian-style cuisine.

It can be used widely in Australasian stir-fries, curries, stews and risottos and also for flavouring poultry or fish dishes. It works well when added to sauces, marinades for BBQs, salad dressings and dips such as mayonnaise and aioli.

In addition, it adds an aromaticflavour to sweet baked goods and desserts such as cookies, cheesecakes, lemon tarts and pies.

Tasneem Backhouse, Sales Director at EHL Ingredients comments: “While Lemon Myrtle may be relatively new to the UK, in Australia it has been used as an ingredient and medicinal remedy for centuries. Many people recognise it in oil format as an essential oil for use in cosmetics, but its use as a food ingredient is set to be one of the nexttrends in cookery.

“We decided to launch the product following demand from our customers for a quality, versatile Lemon Myrtle herb and we trialled many varieties before selecting our unique blend. We are confident that demand for unusual herbs, such as Lemon Myrtle, will continue to grow as consumers become more knowledgeable about international flavours thanks to travel, cookery shows, restaurant experience and home cooking. It’s essential food manufacturers stay ahead of these trends and ensure they recreate flavours and dishes well to ensure a successful and popular end product.

“With over 640,000 British nationals visiting Australia every year, the demand for Lemon Myrtle is certain to increase as consumers search out novel products from around the globe. The international foods market is highly competitive; we understand that manufacturers have to work hard to reinvent products and innovate to maintain customer interest and loyalty. We work with many leading food manufacturers to provide our natural herbs and spices and can even work with product development teams to develop custom blends

“Our products are 100% natural and have been trialed and tested to ensure flavours are maintained during the food production process resulting in high quality dishes and desserts.”
